Obituary for Charles Edward Morrison

Charles Edward Morrison, Sr. passed away on July 20, 2018 at the Middlesboro ARH Hospital. The son of the late George Thomas Morrison and Cornie Massengill Morrison, he was born July 9, 1923 in Bell County, Kentucky. As one of 14 children, he cherished his family.

When America entered World War II, he volunteered for the U.S. Army, trained at Fort Bragg in 1941, and was sent overseas in August of 1942. As a 20 year old artillery truck driver for the 17th Field Artillery Regiment deployed in Northern Africa, he was captured by the Nazis on Valentine's Day of 1943. He was imprisoned as a POW for 839 days in various prison camps in Africa, Italy, Austria, and Germany by the time the war ended on May 8, 1945. He was awarded seven medals including the Middle Eastern campaign medal, American
Defense Service medal, World War II Victory medal, and the Purple Heart for being wounded in battle. Four of his brothers, Andy, Johnny, Bill and G.T. Morrison also served, too.
Mr. Morrison counted it a privilege to serve his country and always reminded younger
generations to not take their American freedom for granted. Mr. Morrison was employed by Kentucky Utilities for 42 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Charles Edward, Jr. and Gerald Morrison, and 11 brothers and sisters: Bessie Johnson, Rachel Mullins, Johnny Morrison, Andy Morrison, Bill Morrison, G.T. Morrison, Jimmie Morrison, Nanie Morrison, Florence and Larence Morrison, Hattie Miles, and Esther Sandifer.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Morrison, and sons, Robert (Rebecca) and Richard
(Vanessa) Morrison. He is also survived by Mary and Audrey Morrison, the widows of Charles
Edward and Gerald. In addition to three stepchildren, Stephen, Vernon, and Shelia Douglas, he is survived by 11 grandchildren: Charles, Keith, Jennifer, Pamela, Micah, Mercer, Tyler,
Alexandra, Eric, Danielle, and Sarah; 8 great grandchildren, and I great-great grandchild,
and one sister, Mary Ruth Brantley of Maryville, Tennessee as well as a host of nieces and
nephews and other family members.

Graveside service will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, July 24, at 1 p.m. at Green Hills
Memorial Gardens by Reverend Astor Simpson, longtime friend and neighbor of Mr. Morrison. Doug and Wayne Bayless, two special friends, will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Shumate Funeral Home is entrusted with all arrangements.
