Obituary for Winifred Ruby Scott Medley

In the opinions of her offspring, Winifred Ruby Scott Medley was an angel on earth. On February 4th, 2018, just four days prior to her 95th birthday, she was summoned to Heaven where she gained a halo and an additional pair of wings. “Winnie”, as she was affectionately known, was born on February 8, 1923, to James Horton Scott and Estelle McKart Scott. She was the second of five daughters locally known as “The Scott Girls”. She was born, reared and educated in her beloved Middlesboro. Winnie’s parents and her older sister, Henryetta Scott Babb, predeceased her. Surviving sisters are Dorothy Sulfridge and Hortense Hatfield, Middlesboro, and Mary Hatfield, Knoxville, Tennessee. Surviving children are James Marcel “Pepper” Medley, Jr. (Charlotte) of Ft. Myers, Florida, Dr. E. Scott Medley (Faye) of Gainesville, Florida and Ginger Ann Medley Camenisch (Bruce) of Lexington, Kentucky. Surviving grandchildren are Ellen Perkins (Mike) and Andrea Thomas (Frank) of Newport, Michigan; Evan Medley (Kelly) of Tempe, Arizona, Katy Medley (Jacks) of Santa Fe, New Mexico, Kevin Camenisch (Erin) of Brentwood, Tennessee and Aaron Camenisch (Tori) of Lexington, Kentucky. Winnie’s eight great grandchildren are Brandon and Carabeth Perkins, James, Ethan and Garret Thomas, Madison, Avery and Benjamin Camenisch. Additional survivors include three nieces, Cynthia Witt, Mary Beth Hooker and Pat Wimble and two nephews, Kenneth Hatfield, Jr and Don Hatfield, Jr.
Winnie was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, Middlesboro, and a proud charter member of the J.O.Y. Sunday School Class where strong friendships were formed. It was on behalf of the J.O.Y. Class that she loyally served in its card ministry. Winnie’s career was spent as a dedicated Catalog Manager at Montgomery Ward for 30 plus years. During the past five years she has enjoyed a splendid retirement in Ft. Myers, Florida with her son and daughter-in-law, “Pepper” and Charlotte, and at Evans Health Care where she appreciated and loved the staff and they, in turn, appreciated and loved her. It is for those reasons the family requests that, in lieu of floral funeral arrangements, donations be made in the form checks (no cash) bearing her name on the memo line to Evans Health Care Memorial Fund, 3735 Evans Avenue, Ft. Myers, Florida, 33901. The intent is to establish “The Winnie Medley Memorial Garden” in a courtyard of the facility where she enjoyed sitting on “beautiful sunshiny days”.
Shumate Funeral Home is entrusted with Winnie’s service which is planned for Friday, February 9, 2018 with visitation beginning at 1 p.m. and the service at 2 p.m. Stephen Earle will officiate and music will be provided by granddaughters, Ellen Perkins and Andrea Thomas. Family members will serve as pallbearers.
God Bless You. We Love You, Mom!

Shumate Funeral Home is entrusted with all arrangements.
