Obituary for Roger T Rowland

Roger T. Rowland, a prominent businessman in the coal mining construction industry, died Wednesday, September 27, 2017 at home surrounded by family. He was 85 years old and a lifelong resident of the Harrogate area. Born September 26, 1932, he was the son of the late L. D. (Dal) and Mabel Carr Rowland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: Hubert and Edwin Rowland; sisters: Vernalie Rowland, Ruth Keck and Elsie Ely; and his first wife and mother of his children, Freda Powell Rowland.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Taylor Rowland; his three children: Harold Rowland, Nancy (Doug) Rowland-Engle, and Marion Rowland; his sister, Rena Wilson of Monroe, MI; a half-sister, Lucy Rowland Bachlott; a stepdaughter, Melody Taylor; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Armand and Kay Cardenas of Chicago and numerous nieces and nephews.

Roger was a graduate of Powell Valley High School and proudly served as a training instructor in the US Army. After his Army service, he was an over the road trucker for several years until he started work as an ironworker primarily around the Appalachian Coal Fields. He spent almost 50 years with Langley and Morgan Corp. of Harlan, Kentucky and its predecessor company rising through the ranks to ultimately become President of the company. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Association of Bituminous Contractors.

He was an avid outdoorsman and a lifetime National Rifle Association member. He enjoyed nothing better than following a bird dog through the fields with his friends or quietly carrying a squirrel rifle through the woods.

Those who knew Roger knew him as an honest man of integrity who never asked more of anyone then he did of himself. He was talented, kind, gentlemanly, and generous with his time and knowledge. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Shumate Funeral Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to American Red Cross or the charity of your choice.

Shumate Funeral Home is entrusted with all arrangements.
