Obituary for Jessie Sloane Hoe

Jessie S. Hoe passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017, at the Middlesboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 94 years old.

She was born on October 4, 1922, in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Frank H. Sloane and Mary McRoberts Sloane. She was the youngest of their four children, with sisters Mary Elizabeth and Jean, and brother William. She lived her childhood in Seattle, WA, enjoying the loving bond of her close-knit family, a characteristic that she would inspire when she raised her own family years later.

Jessie married Homer L. Hoe, Jr., on August 15, 1945, while he was on furlough from the US Army, having returned from Europe after the fall of Germany. They had met before the war while they were both students at the University of Louisville. After marriage, she returned with Homer to his home town of Middlesboro, Kentucky, where she resided for the remainder of her life.

She and Homer raised three children, all of whom survive her. The eldest, Gary, lives in Albuquerque, NM, with his wife, the former Penelope Rodgers of Louisville, KY. Her second son, Lawrence, lives in Placida, FL, with his wife, the former Julie Russell of Middlesboro. And the youngest, Rebecca, lives in Middlesboro where she moved in 2002 to be with Jessie following Homer's death. Jessie cherished her granddaughters, Heather Richard along with her fiancé, Mike Courtney, of Albuquerque, NM, and Holly Auten and her husband, William Auten, of Livermore, CA.

In addition to raising her family, Jessie was very active in the community. For over 70 years, she was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School and sang alto in the choir for almost 50 years. She was a long-time member of the Middlesboro Garden Club and served multiple terms as its president. Her grace, generosity, and kindness were evident to all who knew her.

In the last years of her life, Jessie was blessed with the loving and devoted friendship of Alma Owens of Middlesboro and the tender care of the dedicated staff at the Middlesboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family extends its heartfelt appreciation and deepest gratitude to these special people.

In keeping with the quiet joy and sunny optimism that marked her life, it was Jessie's wish to forego a formal funeral service. Instead, her family will receive visitors on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 from noon until 2:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Middlesboro. Visitation will be followed by a graveside service attended by family and friends at Green Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to First Baptist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

Jessie would want to share her favorite scripture as comfort to all: '... For I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day'.

2 Timothy 1:12
