Obituary for Elizabeth Eck Turner

Elizabeth Eck Turner, born March 1, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois died Tuesday, May 30, 2017 from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. She was 92. Elizabeth was predeceased in death by her husband, Hubert. She is survived by her son George; son Ray (Ellie), and grandchildren, Yianni, Emma, Luke and Matthew; her brother, Howard Eck and sister-in-law Mrs. Lucille Shotton. Elizabeth was also predeceased by her parents Henry and Helen Wehringer Eck, her brother George Eck, and her sisters Dorothy Grello, Marguerite Hilliard, and Helen Johns.
A graduate of Menasha High School in Menasha, Wisconsin, and a member of the National Honor Society, Elizabeth earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry and in Food and Nutrition from Milwaukee-Downer College in 1947. She was an active member of Kappa Delta Sorority. She worked at Norwegian American Hospital in Milwaukee, did a Dietetic Internship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and studied in Quebec and Montreal Canada as she continued her studies. She held the position of Assistant Dietician at Illinois Central Hospital, and at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, and in 1955 was hired as the Dietician for Middlesboro Miners Hospital. Beginning in 1969, Elizabeth was the Senior Nutritionist with the KY State Department of Health based in Frankford, and trained at Tulane University as a surveyor for Medicare. With Hubert’s support, she kept up with continuing education credits needed for certification as a Registered Dietician. In 1972, she was appointed the Dietician at Middlesboro Appalachian Hospital, from where she retired in 1990.

Elizabeth was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Middlesboro, and a lifetime member of the Middlesboro Historical Society. She will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her infectious giggle, her kind heart, her love of music and her trailblazing spirit in education and travel.

Per her request, there will be no visitation. Graveside service will be held in Green Hills Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 4, 2017 with Dr. Phil Major officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations in Elizabeth’s memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at
